Here's a bit of what you can expect from Nostalgic Summer:

 "October gave a party;
The leaves by hundreds came -
The Chestnuts, Oaks, and Maples,
And leaves of every name.
The Sunshine spread a carpet,
And everything was grand,
Miss Weather led the dancing,
Professor Wind the band."

Musings on Summers End...

"No spring nor summer beauty hath such grace
As I have seen in one autumnal face."
~John Donne

With summers end a mere ten days away, I thought this rainy afternoon would be the perfect time to catch you up on my end of summer activities.
We made our last trip of the season to my favorite summer flea market in Detroit Lakes, MN and it was a great last visit.

Lot's of vendors, cool stuff and treasures galore!
Here's some eye candy from the market:

I met Bill from Red River Antiques and had a great chat about the antique business and selling on Etsy. Bill does very well and is able to make Red River Antiques his full time business. I thought Bill's displays were fantastic!
Here's some pics from his booth:

Love the juxtaposition of the lizard and bust!

My favorite piece was this 1940's Elmer the Doughboy Head Vase!
Check him out at Bill's Etsy shop here

And who doesn't need a spare gravestone?

This is Roxie, Bill's sweet Russel Terrier.  Audrey and Lily loved Roxie!

I have also been checking out EVERY garage sale I can find...need to stock up before the snow flies!

Here are a few of my treasures:

 New baubles

Some display pieces.

TINS!

Happy last days of summer everyone!

Happy Birthday.....September!

 "By all these lovely tokens
September days are here,
With summer’s best of weather
And autumn’s best of cheer."
~Helen Hunt Jackson

A little birthstone history, fact, lore and legend.

If you were born in September you are kind and sympathetic, concerned and detailed, trustworthy, loyal and honest.

Your birth colors are aqua, lime, olive and purple.

Septembers birth flower is the Aster. The symbolic meaning of aster flowers is charm, patience, daintiness, afterthought, love of variety, elegance, memory and love. Aster comes from the Greek word meaning star.
In ancient times, it was believed that burning aster leaves would drive away evil snakes.

The traditional and modern birthstone for September is the sapphire.

According to folklore, sapphires will protect your loved ones from envy and harm.  Medieval clergy wore sapphires to symbolize heaven, while commoners thought the gem attracted heavenly blessings.

Sapphires bring mental clarity and clear mental garbage. Carrier of the blue ray, when light passes through it in just the right way. Humm....I don't have a clue what that means, but "You've got that going for you, which is nice." OK I promise that is the LAST time I use that quote in a blog post! :-)

Husbands and wives in ancient times frequently exchanged gifts of sapphires. Although the fact that sapphires represent sincerity and faithfulness was undoubtedly the primary reason it was a popular marriage gift, another motive may have been at work: it was believed that a sapphire would not shine if worn by someone who was wicked or impure. Sapphires were considered to be so powerful they continued to protect the original owner even after being sold.

Some ancient cultures thought that if a sapphire container held a venomous snake, it would die. In addition, people believed that sapphire had medical healing properties, such as the ability to cure colic, rheumatism, blindness, and mental illnesses.

The agate is Septembers mystical birthstone. Agate is believed to discern truth, accept circumstances, and is a powerful emotional healer. Legend says that Agate improves memory and concentration, increases stamina and encourages honesty.

It is believed the agate prevents insomnia and insures pleasant dreams, enhances personal courage and protects against danger. Agates provides a calming influence, improves perception, concentration and help to develop and increase one's analytical talents.

Happy Birthday to everyone born in September!
"Birthdays are good for you.  Statistics show that the people who have the most live the longest."  ~Larry Lorenzoni
