Earth Day 2012

Happy Earth Day!

Last Earth Day I made a pledge to donate a percentage of my Etsy sales to The World Wildlife Fund and I am happy to report I will be sending them a check for almost $200!
I am also happy to announce that after careful consideration and research going forward 5% of all my Etsy sales will be donated to The World Wildlife Fund. I am so impressed with this wonderful organization and admire the simplicity of their mission... "WWF's vision is to build a future in which people live in harmony with nature." "WWF’s mission is to conserve nature and reduce the most pressing threats to the diversity of life on Earth."

Here at Nostalgic Summer I have been working very hard to make jewelry with this simple rule "Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle" And my new line of jewelry embodies this vision for my company.
The Re-purposed Tin Jewelry line is made using castoff vintage tins and brass bezel cups that are made in the USA!

I hope everyone has a wonderful Earth Day....make a pledge to do something good for our Mother Earth....today and everyday!

"The old Lakota was wise.  He knew that man's heart away from nature becomes hard; he knew that lack of respect for growing, living things soon led to lack of respect for humans too."  ~Chief Luther Standing Bear

An Update....Commission Pieces

In March I posted about three commission pieces I was working on. They are finished and have been delivered to my client...so I thought I would give you a peak at how they turned out.

We started with this wonderful collection of vintage jewelry from her Grandmother.
And.... I created three new updated pieces for her.
A Pearl, gold chain and vintage brooch necklace for her soon to be Sister-in-law.
A Charm necklace made with her Grandmothers vintage cameo, gold locket (complete with the sweetest photos of her Grandmother and Grandfather), vintage brass chain from my collection and wonderful soft pink glass beads from Germany. Accented with a mother of pearl bead.
The third piece is a bracelet made from her Grandmothers vintage enamel leaf brooch.
I was so honored to work with Jacklyn creating these keepsakes and hope she enjoys wearing them as much I did creating them!

If you have family jewelry you are interested in updating and wearing again....please contact me at: renee@nostalgicsummer.com. I would love to work with you to create new "family heirlooms"

Happy Birthday…. April!

A little birthstone history, fact, lore and legend.

“He loves me, He loves me not…”
If you were born in April your flower is the daisy. Medieval knights wore daisy chains made for them by their Ladies when they rode into battle or tournaments, as a sign of their affection and defense of their Ladies' honor.

The Diamond is April’s traditional birthstone.
Diamonds symbolize innocence, eternity, courage and health.
At one time, it was even thought that if you took a diamond into bed with you, it would cure your illness!

The diamond, in addition to being a symbol of everlasting love, was once thought to bring courage. In Sanskrit, the diamond is called "vajra," which also means lightning; in Hindu mythology, vajra was the weapon of Indra, the king of gods.

The purest of all the gemstones and the hardest substance known to man, the diamond has an ability to reflect light, which many believe increases personal clarity of the mind and body.

“A kiss on the hand may be quite continental, But Diamonds are a girl's best friend.”
Leo Robin

The Opal is Aprils mystical birthstone. Since that’s Octobers birthstone, I will save all Opals fun info for then….stay tuned!

“Diamonds are nothing more than chunks of coal that stuck to their jobs.”
Malcolm Forbes

Stay tuned, next month for Happy Birthday… May!
